Satin vs gloss paint: which should you choose?

How the two finishes compare on looks, cleaning and where to use them.

TaskCoast teamLast updated 21 September 2026

The short answer

Use satin (low sheen) for most walls, and gloss or semi gloss for doors, trims and areas that get wiped often.

Looks

  • Satin has a soft glow that hides small bumps in the wall.
  • Gloss is shiny and shows every imperfection, but looks crisp on trims.

Cleaning and wear

  • Gloss is the toughest and easiest to wipe clean.
  • Satin handles light cleaning and is fine for living areas and bedrooms.

Where to use each

  • Living rooms and bedrooms: satin or low sheen
  • Kitchens and bathrooms: semi gloss or a satin made for wet areas
  • Doors, skirting boards and window frames: gloss or semi gloss

Cost

Prices are similar. Labour matters more: gloss needs more preparation because it shows flaws.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, after a light sand and clean so the new coat sticks.
